Installing SQL Server 2016 RC3

A new preview version of MS SQL Server 2016 – RC3 –  is available now which I’d like to install in my testing environment. This installation will be used later for the upcoming tests of SQL Server 2016 (RC3). In this article I’ll briefly go through the necessary installation steps.

I will install SQL Server Database Engine, Reporting Services and SSMS on Windows Server 2012R2.

Prerequisites:

As I’m about to install Reporting Services I need to install IIS first:

Now let’s run the installation wizard:

Before proceeding with the installation I must install update KB2919355:12 14

After installing KB2919355 and re-running the setup wizard I cab proceed with the installation:

As you may have already noticed, the SSMS is not included in the SQL Server 2016 media any more – now we must download and install it separately (because SQL Server and SSMS will now develop independently of each other).

The Netframework 4.6.1 is required for the SSMS to work:

Reporting Services:

Summary:

MS SQL Server 2016 RC3 is successfully installed. In the upcoming posts I’ll test some new features of  SQL Server  2016.
